Case Detail

Customer Background

Our customer is a food storage solutions supplier serving commercial kitchens, supermarkets, food distribution facilities and cold chain projects.

Because its customers operate different types of chilled and frozen storage facilities, the company needed a shelving solution that could be adapted to various room layouts, product sizes and storage capacities.

The supplier was not simply looking for an individual shelving unit. It needed a reliable and repeatable product solution that could be offered across different food storage projects.

The Customer’s Challenge

Cold rooms present more demanding conditions than normal dry-storage areas. Shelving is regularly exposed to low temperatures, moisture, condensation and frequent cleaning.

The customer initially considered dark-colored coated shelving to match the appearance of an existing project. However, the main priorities were long-term corrosion resistance, hygiene and reliable performance in a cold room environment.

Conventional powder-coated steel shelving may look suitable when newly installed, but scratches or damage to the surface coating can expose the internal steel. Continuous contact with moisture and condensation may then increase the risk of corrosion.

The customer therefore required a solution that could provide:

  • Reliable performance in chilled and frozen environments

  • Better resistance to moisture and corrosion

  • Hygienic surfaces suitable for food storage

  • Adjustable storage space for different products

  • Multiple size options for different cold room layouts

  • Convenient cleaning and daily maintenance

  • Stable load-bearing performance

  • A solution suitable for repeat project supply

Our Solution

After reviewing the application, Fortune Shelving recommended a modular cold room shelving system with an internal steel core and an NSF-grade polypropylene exterior.

The reinforced steel core provides structural strength and load-bearing support. The polypropylene exterior creates a smooth, moisture-resistant surface that is better suited to cold, humid and hygiene-sensitive environments.

Instead of relying on a decorative surface coating, this construction combines mechanical strength with practical protection against moisture and routine cleaning.

The shelving system is designed for temperature conditions ranging from -38°C to 88°C, making it suitable for chilled storage, freezer rooms and other temperature-controlled facilities.

Customized Configuration

Because cold room dimensions and storage requirements vary between projects, we did not recommend a single fixed shelving specification.

Our team helped the customer configure the system according to several practical factors:

  • Available wall length and internal cold room dimensions

  • Required aisle width and operator access

  • Carton, container and food-package dimensions

  • Required number of shelf levels

  • Expected load per shelf

  • Straight runs, corner arrangements and connected bays

  • Installation and future adjustment requirements

Multiple shelving lengths and depths were available so the customer could combine different units within one cold room. Adjustable shelf levels also allowed the vertical spacing to be changed when the stored products or packaging dimensions changed.

For larger storage areas, starter and add-on shelving configurations could be combined to create continuous shelving runs while reducing unnecessary upright frames.

Product Specifications

The proposed cold room shelving solution included:

  • Reinforced internal steel core

  • NSF-grade polypropylene exterior

  • Temperature tolerance from -38°C to 88°C

  • Available load capacity of approximately 150–250 kg per shelf

  • Adjustable shelf positions

  • Removable shelf panels

  • Moisture-resistant and corrosion-resistant surfaces

  • Multiple standard length, depth and height options

  • Straight, corner and add-on configurations

  • Adjustable feet for improved stability on cold room floors

The removable shelf panels make routine cleaning easier and allow food residue or packaging debris to be cleared without dismantling the complete shelving structure.

Why This Material Was Recommended

The customer’s original preference for a dark-colored finish was considered during the selection process. However, for long-term use in a cold room, material performance was more important than color alone.

We explained that powder-coated shelving is generally better suited to dry or moderately humid environments. If the coating is damaged during transportation, installation or daily use, moisture may reach the steel beneath the coating.

For this reason, we recommended the steel-core polypropylene shelving system as the more practical option for cold room storage. It offers a clean appearance while providing better protection against moisture, condensation and frequent washing.

For projects requiring an all-metal construction, stainless steel shelving can also be considered according to the customer’s hygiene requirements, budget and operating environment.

Project Support

Our support extended beyond supplying standard shelving components.

We helped the customer compare materials, review the intended storage environment and select appropriate unit dimensions. We also provided product specifications and configuration guidance to support communication between the supplier and its end customer.

By using modular components and multiple standard sizes, the customer could develop suitable layouts for different projects without requiring a completely new shelving design each time.

This approach helped create a more flexible and repeatable cold room storage solution.

Value for the Customer

The proposed solution provided the customer with several practical and commercial benefits:

  • A shelving system designed specifically for cold and humid environments

  • Improved resistance to corrosion and moisture

  • Easier cleaning for food storage applications

  • Flexible configurations for different cold room dimensions

  • Adjustable storage capacity for changing product sizes

  • Standardized components suitable for repeat projects

  • Reduced dependence on project-specific tooling

  • Easier quotation and specification for future customers

  • Lower long-term maintenance risk than conventional coated shelving

Most importantly, the supplier gained a cold room shelving solution that could be adapted to different end-user projects while maintaining consistent materials, construction and product quality.

Conclusion

Choosing shelving for a cold room involves more than selecting the correct dimensions and load capacity. Temperature, condensation, hygiene, cleaning frequency and long-term corrosion resistance must also be considered.

By combining a reinforced steel core, an NSF-grade polypropylene exterior and a modular configuration, Fortune Shelving developed a practical solution for commercial food storage and cold chain applications.

Whether the project requires individual shelving units, continuous shelving runs or corner configurations, we can recommend suitable sizes and layouts based on the available space and storage requirements.
